Is Steam’s Top Sellers Chart a Unit-Sales Ranking? Why Free Games Appear
Steam Top Sellers is not a simple ranking of copies sold. Product structure and revenue scope matter when comparing premium and free-to-play games.
Key findings
- Revenue rankings differ from unit-sales rankings.
- A free base game can earn through other paid products.
- Rank changes cannot be converted directly into sales amounts.
Top-selling does not necessarily mean most copies
Steam’s sales chart is not the same as a chart ordered by units sold. The platform’s definition of included revenue affects the ordering. Comparing expensive and inexpensive products by position alone does not establish which has more buyers. A ranking gives relative placement, not a public order ledger.
Preserve the original chart name and market in research. Relabeling a top-selling position as a unit-sales position quietly changes the question from spending to purchase volume. Any calculation built on that new label inherits the mistake. The distinction matters before comparing either audience size or commercial performance.
Why free games can appear in a sales discussion
A free base game describes entry, not the complete business model. The CS2 listing, for example, combines free play with Prime upgrades and in-game purchase options. Other free products can have different paid offerings, whose roles need to be identified individually.
Multiplying a zero base-game price by players and concluding there is no revenue misses the actual spending opportunities. The reverse shortcut is equally misleading: a high chart position does not reveal a verified amount of in-game purchase revenue.
Does a higher rank guarantee revenue growth?
Rank is relative. A game’s revenue can remain unchanged while larger movements elsewhere alter its position. A major launch or a promotion can change the comparison environment for the entire chart. Position alone does not isolate what happened to one product’s spending.
Place ranks, prices and product events together and retain their observation dates. Without actual revenue, describe movement as a rise or fall in rank. Several positions of movement should not be translated into a specific percentage of sales growth.
Use the chart to guide product and competitor research
Begin with comparable business models and check sustained presence rather than selecting the highest name on one day. For premium games, investigate discounts and purchase reviews. For free-to-play products, identify the specific paid content before discussing the business.
Top Sellers is valuable for generating questions: which products are attracting spending attention, and which updates deserve a closer look? It is not a universal endpoint for reconstructing exact revenue for every game. Recognizing the limit still leaves plenty of useful market information.
